What is the menopause?

The menopause takes place when a woman’s menstruation ends (when her periods stop). The resulting hormonal changes produce physical symptoms (for example, hot flushes) and also emotional symptoms (for example, mood swings) in most menopausal women, and this impacts on women’s health.

Some women can reach their menopause even in their 30s or in their 40s, and when you are under 45 when you enter your menopause, then it is called a ‘premature’ menopause. In the United Kingdom, the average age that women experience their menopause is 52.

Your IPSA Medical menopause consultation

At your IPSA Medical menopause clinic, one of IPSA Medical’s female clinicians will carry out your menopause consultation in our confidential and conducive clinic setting.

You will be seen immediately by your IPSA Medical specialist and she will always take your menopause symptoms seriously.

During your menopause consultation, your IPSA Medical clinician will discuss a range of both hormonal and non-hormonal/natural methods with you, perhaps recommending that blood tests are carried out to determine your current hormonal profile. Your IPSA Medical specialist will discuss all the available menopause treatments with you and decide on the most effective menopause treatment depending on your presenting symptoms.

What causes the menopause?

Changes in sex-hormone levels lead to the menopause. Both physical and emotional menopause symptoms are associated with a drop in your oestrogen hormone level, with symptoms including:

  • Irritability
  • Hot flushes
  • Mood swings
  • Night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Irregular periods

Your IPSA Medical clinic’s menopause treatments

When your menopause symptoms are affecting you negatively, your IPSA Medical clinician might offer you a hormonal treatment: hormone replacement therapy (HRT). HRT replaces your oestrogen, and thus relieves your menopausal symptoms. HRT is available as a:

  • Cream
  • Gel
  • Tablet
  • Implant or
  • Skin patch

Your ISPA Medical menopause clinic can also provide menopause blood tests which support your menopause diagnosis, natural menopause treatments, and non-hormonal treatments to combat your menopausal symptoms.

If you are not sure whether you have reached the menopause or are in the peri-menopausal state, blood test can give you a better idea of what your hormones are doing. This may help to explain some of the symptoms you may be experiencing at this time.
