Constipation, which is a very common condition, affects all age groups, resulting in passing painful/hard stools and having problems when emptying the bowels.

Constipation can be caused due to:

  • Not eating enough fibre
  • The side effects from some medicines
  • Not drinking enough fluids
  • An underlying medical condition

If you do have constipation symptoms (such as a bloated stomach or diarrhoea, tummy pain associated with your bowel movements, or incomplete emptying of your bowels), then contact IPSA Medical for advice.

Always have any persistent constipation or bowel-habit changes investigated, especially if you are 40+ years old.

IPSA Medical’s Constipation Treatments

At the IPSA Medical clinic, our resident doctor can see you immediately. The clinic is clean and quiet.

Appointments are at times to suit you. A full consultation (to discuss your symptoms) and an examination (to rule out any serious causes for your symptoms) will be undertaken.

Your IPSA Medical doctor might recommend that you have a full blood screen, again, to rule any other conditions out.

If your doctor does feel that blood tests are required, he/she can do these immediately. Results are discussed with you on a one-to-one basis and most results are back within 24 hours.

During your constipation consultation, your IPSA Medical doctor will talk through the different methods for treating your symptoms. Depending on the presenting symptoms, you will be offered (from a range of medications) a treatment to help to control your constipation symptoms.

Diet and management once home, plus lifestyle changes you should make to minimise your constipation symptoms to keep them under control, will be discussed.

If you do need any further support/advice during recovery once you have gone home, then your IPSA Medical doctor will be available (via phone, every day of the week).

If you need a sick note to cover work absences, your IPSA Medical doctor will provide that during the consultation.

If you do have constipation, contact IPSA Medical. You will be allocated a same-day appointment. Alternatively, book online for a constipation consultation with our experienced doctors.
