If you are experiencing nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhoea, IPSA Medical offers an immediate consultation in our clinic (which is both clean and quiet). This appointment will be at a time that suits you.

Your IPSA Medical doctor will run through your medical history at the time of your appointment. This enables the doctor to determine the cause of your sickness and/or diarrhoea. To rule out the serious causes for these symptoms, you will be given a full examination.

If further management is required in a hospital setting, then your IPSA Medical doctor will both refer you and arrange transport for you to your local hospital.

IPSA Medical: Treating Sickness

Your IPSA Medical doctor will discuss the available treatment methods with you (alongside diet and symptom management that you can do once home), if we can manage your symptoms at the clinic.

For severe symptoms, you may be given a Valoid injection. The active ingredient in Valoid is called cyclizine, which is an anti-histamine. It is usually used to treat/prevent vomiting and nausea that is caused by various middle-ear disorders, or following radiotherapy or surgery.

When you are vomiting profusely – and therefore cannot ingest tablets –, you can be given a Valoid injection. This type of injection works by stopping vomiting and nausea in approximately 15–20 minutes, which is a better response time than for medication.

Cyclizine as an anti-sickness injection is effective for:

  • Travel sickness
  • Severe vomiting
  • Middle-ear disorders (such as Meniere’s disease), which can cause vomiting, vertigo attacks and nausea
  • Gastroenteritis

You will also be provided with prescription-strength anti-sickness medication alongside an antacid to take home with you.

If we find that you have what is termed as ‘Traveller’s Diarrhoea’ (vomiting and diarrhoea that is due to some type of bacterial infection), then your IPSA Medical doctor might then prescribe an antibiotic course for you.

IPSA Medical doctors are available 24/7 by phone (in case you require any more advice/support during the recovery process). Your doctor can also supply immediate sick notes for work absences during the consultation.

For a same-day appointment if you are suffering from vomiting, nausea or diarrhoea, you can contact IPSA Medical by phone. Alternatively, you can book your online appointment to gain immediate access to an IPSA Medical doctor.
