At the IPSA Medical clinic, we offer immediate consultations at a time that is good for you, and our clinic is both clean and quiet. We will provide a full consultation, during which we take pictures of your scar/s.
Although scars cannot be entirely removed, often they can be made less obvious. When you come for your appointment, your IPSA Medical doctor will go over the various options that are available so that the best treatment mode for your particular scar/s can be determined.
Suggested treatment options, which your doctor will discuss with you, might include silicone gel sheets, silicone creams or steroid injections. Depigmenting creams may be suggested for scars that are pigmented.
Injections of Corticosteroids
Corticosteroid injections are given to treat raised scars (such as hypertrophic scars or keloid scars). The appearance of these types of scars can be improved substantially with these kinds of injections.
Your IPSA Medical doctor will give multiple, small injections to the scar region. This both flattens the scar and reduces inflammation. Repeat injections may be needed, and this depends on the type of scar that you have.
The injections, often given on three separate occasions (at 4–6-week intervals), allows your doctor to assess your response to the treatment. If the scar is seen to be improving, then the treatment might be continued for up to several months.
Silicone Gel/Sheets
For hypertrophic scars or keloid scars, one treatment option involves applying silicone sheets or gel to the skin as it is healing. This can reduce the redness and acts to minimise the unsightly nature of these scars.
The silicone gel/sheets are positioned over the scar and left on for 12 hours each day. For this treatment to be effective, this needs to be done for a minimum of three months.
Your IPSA Medical doctor will review your scar-injection treatment for some time, until both you and your doctor are happy with the final treatment result. At the close of treatment, you can then see the before and after pictures showing your recovery.
